Consiglio Comunale dei Ragazzi

Ricordate la newsletter di dicembre quando scrivemmo che tre dei nostri ragazzi si erano candidati come consiglieri per il CCR di Udine proponendo un argomento che ritenevano importante? Ebbene sì, due dei nostri studenti sono stati eletti, Giorgia di Grade 4 e Pietro di Grade 7. È stata una grande soddisfazione per noi tutti, in quanto solamente due ragazzi tra tutte le scuole autonome di Udine avrebbero potuto ottenere la candidatura, e noi ce l’abbiamo fatta.
La finalità di questa iniziativa è quella di offrire occasioni dove i giovani cittadini possono esprimere le proprie opinioni, avanzare proposte, porre domande e partecipare attivamente alla vita della comunità. Sostanzialmente è proprio a loro che il Sindaco dà il compito di rappresentare i più giovani e di contribuire, con i loro consigli alla qualità della vita del nostro comune.
La cerimonia si è svolta martedì 21 gennaio presso la Sala Ajace (Loggia del Lionello) alla presenza del Sindaco Fontanini e dell’Assessore all’Istruzione Elisa Battaglia. Quasi tutti gli alunni di G4 e G7 hanno partecipato, accompagnati da maestra Francesca, Mrs. Green e la prof. Maricchio, orgogliosi e contenti per il successo dei loro compagni. Noi tutti auguriamo loro una lunga e proficua “carriera politica”  che sarà di certo impegnativa, in quanto richiede sacrificio, empatia e capacità di ascolto, ma ricca sicuramente di soddisfazioni e nuove esperienze!

Grade 7 Zentangles

A few years ago, there was an artistic trend where adults bought books filled with black patterns, then spent hours colouring them. The original name for these patterns is ‘zentangles’. We were told that the hobby was a relaxing and stress-busting activity. For those of us who are creative, this was not news, and many people relieve intensive meetings with detailed doodles. Last term, Grade 7 learned how to draw patterns, beyond the simple geometric shapes learned in Elementary. Creating coherent designs is a complex process from the initial ideas drawn in pencil, to the somewhat laborious task of outlining in permanent pen. And then comes the fun bit… the colouring! Look at these examples from Giacomo, Helena, Luigi and Lucia. Notice the details and time spent creating this artwork.

Grade 6 Find Their Balance

The usual questions:
“Do you like reading?”
“What genre of books do you like?”
“Have you tried…..?”
and
“What does reading mean to you?”
Imagine my delight when one voice piped up, “Reading is life!” And several students stood up in support and to be photographed for posterity!

But not all…..”What about sport?” someone asked and several others backed him up with “Life is sport!”

Difficult to argue with that… not so difficult to argue when someone very tentatively and mischievously came up with “Life is Fortnite!” Luckily with a decided twinkle in his eye. “Only a virtual life, not a real one.” I answered.
“Why can’t life be both reading and sport? Surely we can find time for both. The important thing is to find a balance.”
The whole class stood and posed for that one. Phew!!!!

Positive emotions ensure language learning success! Just ask our German students!

Keeping in mind the impact of positive emotions in learning, students are constantly involved in “hands on” activities which have the aim of making the topic meaningful by performing physical activities while having fun.

Grade 6 students are learning numbers. What better way to consolidate learning than having fun playing BINGO and getting some little prizes? The students were also asked to make a drawing out of a written text with the topic “WHAT CAN YOU SEE FROM THE WINDOW?”, thus learning how to get on top of a text using the dictionary.

Grade 7 students performed a DIALOGUE AT THE MARKET buying fruit and vegetables. Their performances were recorded and subsequently analysed by the students themselves focusing on pronunciation and on possible improvements. The Grade 7’s also made a poster describing their recent FIELD TRIP TO FLORENCE, thus consolidating the verbs in the past tense, means of transport, places to visit, weather and food.

Grade 8 students are working on a VIDEO PRESENTATION OF THE SCHOOL. Students are writing the script with data about the school and imaginable conversations with a visitor and will subsequently film all parts of the school presenting the building to a visitor.

Grade 7 and 8 students were also involved in the TRANSLATION PROJECT from German into English of the Christmas Calendar containing stories about how Christmas is celebrated all around the world.

In classe si legge il giornale!

Cronaca, reportage, articolo di spalla, taglio basso sono solo alcune delle parole chiave protagoniste delle lezioni di italiano nelle prime settimane di dicembre in sesta. Dopo aver analizzato la struttura della testata di un giornale, gli studenti hanno provato a cimentarsi con la lettura di alcuni articoli di quotidiani, proposti dall’insegnante, e li hanno commentati insieme.
Oltre all’argomentazione rispetto alle vicende e ai fatti accaduti, locali ed internazionali, gli alunni hanno notato, a livello testuale, una diversa struttura sintattica e lessicale. Proprio la terminologia specifica è stata oggetto di spiegazione ed approfondimento, e si è cercato di rendere alcune delle nuove parole più fruibili ed accessibili anche nelle produzioni scritte richieste in classe.
I ragazzi hanno risposto all’attività con entusiasmo ed interesse, proponendo loro stessi la lettura e il commento di alcuni articoli di cronaca locale degli ultimi giorni. Chissà se questo esperimento darà l’impulso ad una sana curiosità nei confronti dell’articolo di giornale… io lo spero proprio!

SHAKESPEARE’S TWELFTH NIGHT

Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

“If music be the food of love, play on, give me excess of it!” So begins Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, a comedy of mistaken identity, romance and general tomfoolery. In their work with learning more about literary history, the Grade 7 literature students have recently studied the bard in great detail. They have read and written some sonnets, learned more about the state of England in the Elizabethan age, and finally had the chance to perform some of his immortal lines themselves – though whether they achieved greatness or merely had greatness thrust upon them is still up for debate!

A tutta fiaba!

Quest’anno, tra i generi narrativi affrontati in antologia durante il primo trimestre, è stato proposto lo studio della fiaba. Abbiamo analizzato la struttura, i ruoli fissi dei personaggi, i modelli di riferimento e, per finire, ci siamo soffermati sul dietro le quinte, ovvero le funzioni di Propp.
Gli studenti si sono dimostrati fin dall’inizio interessati e coinvolti in una partecipazione attiva durante le lezioni, permettendo uno svolgimento del programma fluente e dal ritmo incalzante. Sull’onda di un clima così propositivo, è stato assegnato un progetto di approfondimento, legato alle fiabe più conosciute.
Gli allievi, lavorando a gruppi di tre, hanno provato a rivisitare le fiabe, proponendo una nuova stesura, da un punto di vista diverso da come le conosciamo. Ecco allora che per Cappuccetto Rosso è stata rielaborata una versione vista con gli occhi del lupo, mentre la fata Smemorina ha prestato la sua voce per raccontarci la storia di Cenerentola; ci siamo lasciati trasportare dal racconto della Bestia che ci ha illustrato nuovi e inaspettati scenari in La Bella e La Bestia.
Pur trattandosi di un argomento apparentemente semplice, il lavoro stabilito ha richiesto impegno, organizzazione precisa e rispetto delle caratteristiche del genere studiato, oltre ad un bilanciato gioco di squadra, indispensabile per il raggiungimento degli obiettivi.

NETBALL KNOW-HOW

As our Netball module has begun so has the interest of our Middle School students. While there are many new rules and regulations to learn the students have taken to it like ducks to water. They have applied many of the concepts we used in the buildup games that have many similarities to the sport. While not typically played in Italy we are hoping to create some interest and awareness about this wonderful sport.

3D Digestive Systems

One of the challenges when teaching Science is to find ways, other than experiments, to make the work practical. Recently Grade Seven were set the problem of making three-dimensional models of the digestive system. All the students chose ‘poster’ versions of their models, hanging them on the wall. Some are more successful than others! This week we have developed the theme of digestion a little further, and the students are investigating ‘alien visitors’ or parasites of the digestive system. Nice! We have seen a marked improvement in the washing of hands since the start of this unit.

Vedo Doppio!

Eccoli i nuovi studenti di Grade 6! Sono vivaci, propositivi e proiettati con il giusto entusiasmo all’anno scolastico appena iniziato. Molteplici attività e un programma corposo e variegato li attendono: dalla grammatica all’analisi dei testi in antologia, dallo svolgimento del tema settimanale alla lettura dei tanto attesi miti e poemi epici. Non mancheranno inoltre gli approfondimenti e i momenti di confronto.

I primini della Middle School sono tanti, 31 in tutto, e per la prima volta dalla nascita della The Udine International School, sono divisi in due sezioni. E’ questa la novità! Sintomo di una scuola che sta crescendo, non solo sul piano numerico, ma anche a livello qualitativo, attenta alla didattica e alla formazione dei suoi allievi.

Sono orgogliosa di aver preso in carico entrambe le seste e, con lo stesso entusiasmo dei miei studenti, sono pronta anch’io ad un ricco e mi auguro fruttuoso anno! In bocca al lupo ragazzi!
