Help! Help! Is there a doctor in school?
Oh, thank goodness that last week in Grade 1 there were doctors and nurses to deal with any health issues, policemen to arrest those who were misbehaving and even a judge to decide if they were innocent or guilty. And it didn’t end there! Firemen, trash collectors, artists, farmers, and forest rangers… to name but a few.
Each of these visitors told us something about their jobs: what they do, where they work, when they work, what tools they use and what they wear. We have learnt so much about how hard people in our community work and what they do for us.
Who knows what jobs we will do in the future?

Il decalogo dell’amicizia
L’amicizia è un bene prezioso, va coltivato e curato proprio come una piantina che cresce e cambia giorno per giorno. Questo i bambini di Gr2 lo sanno e quotidianamente si dimostrano reciproco affetto ed amicizia. Tuttavia a volte le idee non collimano, può scappare qualche presa in giro e non sempre si accettano i comportamenti altrui, così è importante a volte fermarsi e riflettere; riflettere su ciò che può aiutarci a ritrovare l’armonia e il modo di andare d’accordo. Questo piccolo laboratorio sulle dieci regole d’oro dell’amicizia aveva proprio questo intento: i bambini, divisi in piccoli gruppi, hanno parlato tra loro e concordato sulle dieci regole che contano di più nell’amicizia. Questo ha permesso loro di capire che anche se si hanno idee diverse si può e si deve trovare il modo per stare bene insieme. Essere un gruppo non significa avere le stesse idee, ma sapersi ascoltare e rispettarsi sempre.

Ricordate la newsletter di dicembre quando scrivemmo che tre dei nostri ragazzi si erano candidati come consiglieri per il CCR di Udine proponendo un argomento che ritenevano importante? Ebbene sì, due dei nostri studenti sono stati eletti, Giorgia di Grade 4 e Pietro di Grade 7. È stata una grande soddisfazione per noi tutti, in quanto solamente due ragazzi tra tutte le scuole autonome di Udine avrebbero potuto ottenere la candidatura, e noi ce l’abbiamo fatta.
La finalità di questa iniziativa è quella di offrire occasioni dove i giovani cittadini possono esprimere le proprie opinioni, avanzare proposte, porre domande e partecipare attivamente alla vita della comunità. Sostanzialmente è proprio a loro che il Sindaco dà il compito di rappresentare i più giovani e di contribuire, con i loro consigli alla qualità della vita del nostro comune.
La cerimonia si è svolta martedì 21 gennaio presso la Sala Ajace (Loggia del Lionello) alla presenza del Sindaco Fontanini e dell’Assessore all’Istruzione Elisa Battaglia. Quasi tutti gli alunni di G4 e G7 hanno partecipato, accompagnati da maestra Francesca, Mrs. Green e la prof. Maricchio, orgogliosi e contenti per il successo dei loro compagni. Noi tutti auguriamo loro una lunga e proficua “carriera politica” che sarà di certo impegnativa, in quanto richiede sacrificio, empatia e capacità di ascolto, ma ricca sicuramente di soddisfazioni e nuove esperienze!

Progetto di lettura
Le vacanze di Natale non sono solo un momento da passare con la famiglia e i propri cari ma anche un periodo in cui avere del tempo per sé e coltivare le proprie passioni, tra cui la lettura. Ai bambini di terza è stato consigliato di leggere un libro a scelta di Roald Dahl, così da dare la massima libertà di seguire i propri gusti personali.
Tornati dalle vacanze abbiamo immediatamente cominciato un lavoro di gruppo sulla recensione dei libri letti. Abbiamo unito le due classi e i gruppi sono stati creati in base al titolo del libro, in modo che i membri siano il più possibile variegati tra le sezioni. Dopo aver riportato le informazioni iniziali come titolo e autore, i bambini hanno subito dovuto confrontarsi con la difficile arte del riassunto: presentare i personaggi con una descrizione concisa ma evocativa. Poi è venuto il momento della trama. Forse non sembra, ma sintetizzare un intero libro, in modo che il racconto sia breve e anche completo, non è cosa da poco. Infatti è un punto su cui stiamo ancora lavorando, assieme agli aspetti più personali come gli elementi che sono piaciuti o meno e perché consigliare il libro. Il progetto è ancora in corso ma si vedono già dei buoni risultati e le capacità di sintesi si stanno via via affinando.
“Non ho niente da insegnare. Voglio soltanto divertire. Ma divertendosi con le mie storie i bambini imparano la cosa più importante: il gusto della lettura”. Ci auguriamo che questo progetto sia uno stimolo quanto le parole di questa citazione di Roald Dahl.

Grade 2 Scientists at Work!
We had a great time before Christmas doing lots of experiments for our exploration of liquids and solids. We made gloop and decorated Christmas trees, brewed up Christmas Slime, and constructed a snow globe!
We also did an experiment that turned solid into a solution and then back into solid again, but in the form of crystals! We dissolved salt in warm water and then designed a way of hanging a candy cane made of pipe cleaners above the solution using newspapers. As the solution soaked up the pipe cleaner, the water evaporated, leaving us with salt crystals!
We looked at these under a microscope and then carried out our own careful drawings of our observations.
Christmas Science was really good fun!

It Seemed Like Nothing Could Go Wrong… Until….
Want to find out what really caused the grand Roman Empire to collapse? Read UIS’ new comic team’s latest release and discover the political ambitions, economic crises, and intricate balances between causes and effects, which drew the final curtain on one of the greatest empires the world has ever seen. The Grade 5 comic strip creators reveal the buildup to the final meltdown in a series of sequential drawings, each created by a single artist, yet striving to maintain unity and coherence in the overall design. The project saw the graphic artists discussing potential frames, then moving from gathering sketches and ideas, to drawing basic initial shapes, adding details, and going over the whole drawing in black ink. Evoking key ideas using sparse dialogue and lettering proved especially challenging. Stay tuned for the team’s next publication! They’re already brainstorming their latest area of exploration… Medieval Europe!

A Jingling Round of Applause for Our Carollers!
The Elementary students were in fine voice again for their Winter Concert. This year we were lucky enough to have our friends from Kindergarten make their debut, singing along with the older children! With the help of our maintenance staff, the car park became a concert venue as our students sang for the parents on the steps in front of the school. The repertoire included the usual favourites and some less well-known songs from around the world. It was a wonderful atmosphere and certainly reflects what makes The Udine International School a very special place.
And this was not the end of the story! We then moved to Largo Dei Pecile to enchant shopkeepers and passers-by with our charming voices! The encore was a success once again!

I ragazzi hanno lavorato in gruppo con materiali forniti dalle maestre e poi hanno realizzato un cartellone che è stato abbellito con disegni e immagini.
Infine, per rispettare l’oralità di queste leggende che venivano raccontate di generazione in generazione, ogni gruppo ha esposto il proprio lavoro al resto dei compagni.

REFLECTING ON RIGHTS
November 20th was Universal Children’s Day, and to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Convention on the Rights of the Child UIS invited a special guest speaker.
Lawyer (and UIS Parent!) Federica Tosel came and dedicated her time to explain what rights children have, but also to make it clear that with these rights come responsibilities. “We are given an education but we have the responsibility to do our best every day.”
Grade One have been discussing and questioning what needs and wants are. They have been sorting statements into needs or wants. Needs are what we need to survive, to have a full life. We all have basic needs, which we cannot live without. Then there are things that we want but don’t need to survive. Every child has rights to these basic needs, whatever their ethnic background, religion, gender, language or ability. Children must be informed of their rights so that they can speak up when their own, or someone else’s rights, are not being respected.
Mrs Tosel played some games with us to help us understand that not everything that makes us feel good is a need. As the children walked out of the assembly they reflected on how lucky they are to live in a country that supports their rights and also thought about the children living in other parts of the world who are not as fortunate.
We were given a bracelet and asked to write what we can do to help… there is so much we can do every day. Being kind to one another and being respectful of each other’s beliefs is a great place to start.
